Storytelling

Once upon a time there was a girl who loved to listen. And the more she listened the more she understood that the world was full of stories and that these stories offered not only entertainment but also solace and inspiration. She began to tell stories from dinner tables to classrooms, from the 11th Annual International Storytelling Festival in Vancouver, Canada to Installation LX in Luxembourg. From hospices to forests, new words and old tales found each other.

This girl (now a woman!) organised cabarets and film festivals, fundraisers and workshops. From the In the House festival in Vancouver which explored the Heaven Hell and Purgatory of every home, to 1001 Nacht in the Rote Fabrik, Zurich, stories spilled and tumbled together, paving a long and interesting road. In this way the old Siberian saying was proved true: if you don’t know the trees you may become lost in the forest. If you don't know the stories you may become lost in life.

From entertainment to education, storytelling has been used by every culture around the world to foster community, to encourage a sense of place, and an understanding of values and morals.

Whether one is a scientist or a monk, gaining awareness of the inter-connectedness of life and choosing how to react or not react is integral to being fully human. Storytellers pull from the story bag unique tools for seeing the world and engaging in life. Stories, myths, and fables provide not only doors to possibilities, but also the keys to those doors.

Rather than teaching a form, within the workshop we will share in the experience of storytelling. People will be given the opportunity to not only hear a story told, but will join in the fun of creating, developing and telling stories.

Stories begin in the mind and create reality - if only for the duration of the story, mind really matters!
