Emergence: the Debate
Stuart Kauffman
Is a member of the Santa Fe Institute. A MacArthur fellowship recipient, he is the leading thinker on self-organization and the science of complexity as applied to biology.
Three basic philosopohic positions with respect to life and mind exist:
- physicalism,which asserts that all explanations are ultimately reducible to the ultimate laws of physics.
- dualism, which asserts that different forms of energy or substance - elan vital and mental - separate life and mind from physics.
- and emergence, which asserts that life and mind are not reducible to physics, but emerge from it. I will discuss the emergence position, and put forward my own thesis with respect at least to life, and possibly mind.
