John Casti
I worked at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA, and was on the faculties of the University of Arizona, NYU and Princeton before joining IIASA in Vienna, when it opened in 1973. From 1992-2002 I was at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe, USA.
In 2005 I returned to Vienna as a Research Fellow at the Wissenschaftzentrum Wien, where I am establishing a new research program devoted to addressing the interface of the arts/humanities/social sciences, natural sciences, and philosophy/mathematics. In addition, I co-founded The Kenos Circle, a society for “exploration of the future”. I am also a Senior Research Scholar at IIASA, where I work on questions of computer modeling of social processes.

An exploration of the question, "Is 'good' art complex?" This talk proceeds by first explaining the Chaitin-Kolmogorov theory of algorithmic complexity, and then defines a subjective measure of complexity and "goodness" for some pieces of abstract art. Comparisons and connections between these notions are then explored by empirical investigation to conclude that, yes, in general what people perceive as "good" tends to be more complex than that which they see as less good.
